Thorm Mausoleum in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an optional side dungeon with a secret darker than the Shadow-Cursed Lands that it inhabits. Nestled far away from prying eyes, you’ll have to go out of your way to challenge one of the game’s longest and most challenging dungeons.
Taking on the Mausoleum, however, will reward you with not only numerous new artifacts but insight into the darkest secrets of General Ketheric Thorm and the origins of the Shadow Curse. Your cleverness and ruthlessness, as well as your morals, here will be put to the test.
How To Find Thorm Mausoleum
The Thorm Mausoleum is placed in the far northeastern corner of the Shadow-Cursed Lands. You’ll have to go past the House of Healing and a dense graveyard beside it.
As you approach this area, we recommend having Astarion and Shadowheart in your party if you care for the extra context and story-related expansions.
Raphael will meet you outside the Mausoleum and request that you take care of an issue within the Mausoleum. Accept or deny him and head inside after retrieving the Waypoint marker up the hill to the right.
As you enter the Mausoleum, you will notice a new status effect:
Glutted Catacombs: The spell Animate Dead: Skeleton does not require a skeleton to raise the dead in this area.
You can use this to your advantage while exploring the mausoleum, should you be playing a necromancer. Otherwise, there are no negative effects from this condition.
How To Solve The Thorm Mausoleum Puzzle
Entering the Mausoleum, there are a few side rooms and small notable looting areas. It’s worth exploring them for materials. However, for those who want to solve the puzzle without relying on this guide, it’s worth looting the Diaries of Malus Thorm in these rooms. Two locations are:
- In the left room (from the entrance) in front of the the desk
- On the far side of the closed tomb in the entrance room on the ground
The Stained Book on the desk in the right room of the entrance also contains an important hint for the puzzle.
For hints in the next area, grab the Temple Map from the desk in the north room separating the first coffin from the second, open one.
After collecting the optional hint books, venture into the farthest (northern) room with the empty coffin. Be careful; there are several traps here.
Disarm the marble trap plates on the left and right side of the entrance of this room first, and then the square stepping plates on the right and left sides of the center of the room (along the walking path).
There are three pictures in this room. Each has a button beneath them. Press the buttons of the pictures in this order:
- Moonrise Towers (SW)
- Grief (SE)
- General (N)
If you do not press the buttons in the right order, the room will fill with black void fog.
Upon solving the puzzle, proceed through the now open doors on either side of the General picture. Descend into the now opened Shar’s Sanctum, where you can search for the Nightsong, complete Raphael’s quest, and potentially determine the fate of the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
